veryone is born to the world to the same opportunities; to 7 days a week, to 24 hours a day in 365 days in a year. But one wonders why some people are richer and others poorer. Some people have the money to raise a three star hotel without difficulty. And yet they've the same blood colour with those without cash enough to raise a grass thatched house without difficulty! Why?

For the time I've spent my life on planet earth mingling with a cross section of people (like professors, doctors – people with PhDs, and the like), I have realized that if you have to make any difference in life then you've got to take up the following principles.

Don't spend your time but do invest it. You can spend your time, invest your time or waste your time – the choice is yours. But I would encourage you to invest your time. Otherwise, life may not turn out to be enjoyable to you. The difference between the poor and the rich is that the poor spend their time while the rich invest their time.

Don't be everybody's friend. If you crave to make your dreams come true then you've got to be sharp in selecting your friends. Friends can be constructive and friends can also be destructive. Those who take away from you and don't add to you anything are destructive. Spend your time with friends who have goals similar to yours. Spend your time with people who see opportunities in crises not people who see impossibilities in life. Spend your time with people who look at the glass and say "it's half full" not those who say "it's half empty." To be concise, your friends should be people who appreciate challenges.

Don't try to be great. It's useless for you to spend your time trying hard to be noticed. You're already a great person. Instead of you trying hard to be noticed, try making small opportunities great. After all, "great people are not simply equal to the great things they do but they become great through making small opportunities great," remarked Ambrose Kibuka in his book, After University, What Next?

Don't be a "police man." I mean don't go around watching what other people are doing. Be a businessman. Get at something that will get for you cash, eh?

Don't wait to be older. Recently, I was surfing the Internet about the first African American President of the US, Barack Hussein Obama II, I learnt that at the age of 7, he had developed an ambition of becoming the president, the president not a common man! Can you imagine that? So, this is the time for you to examine yourself. If you are not too young to die, you are not too young to make a difference. You have the potential. My dear friend, get started today, now.

Don't do nothing, do something. In this world there are two types of people: those who make things happen and those who let things happen. I don't know what type of person you are. You know yourself better than I do. But I should think that if we have to make a difference in our lives, then we need to make things happen. But not to let things happen because we may not understand why things are happening or may learn of what has happened too late when we can't benefit to make a difference.

Don't try to be like everybody else. You can only be you. You, as an individual, are unique. There is no point trying to reproduce what others have come up with. But, of course, you can always develop somebody's statement into something useful. What I can only urge you to do is to believe in yourself. Don't look around to other people to be yourself. If you have a job, for instance, work diligently and creatively.

Don't hate people in your life. Learn to be forgiving. It helps. Forgiving helps a lot. I am not talking of this per se. I am talking from the experience point of view. Of course, you remember that experience is the best teacher. Begin practising the act of forgiving today. You'll see the magic behind it.

Don't turn your back to your failures. Neither should you say "why have I failed?" when you "fail". Instead, say "what have I learnt from the failure?" Although we've to learn from our failures, it's a better idea to learn from other people's failures than to learn from our own. The reason why I'm talking like this is that we may take long to learn from our failures or may not learn at all.

Don't be a person with a negative attitude. Instead, be a person with a positive attitude. Don't be the type of person who expects the best, but hopes for the worst. When you expect the best, but hope for the worst; the future doesn't belong to you. Be a human being who expects the worst, but hopes for the best. You'll not regret. When you expect the best and hope for the best; the future is yours.

Thank you for the time you devoted to reading this article. I hope your mind has been stretched. And if it's been stretched, the best thing to do is to begin working your way to making a difference in your life.

Very Interesting Day

Last Saturday was a very interesting day of the weekend
whereby John and I enjoyed a lot of things like; playing
football with other teams of Ngora.

The scores were 2:0 in favour of our team.This gave as
joyful happiness. After that, we returned for Heroes Day
celebrations which consisted of enjoying food in various
types i.e. meat and rice.

THE UNFORGETABLE SATURDAY THE 7TH JUNE 2007 IN NGORA HIGH SCHOOL

It was a great warm Saturday morning, the 7th June 2008. I woke up on
the right side of the bed. The school was full of enjoyment because it
was a public holiday (Heroes day).

Hardly had I woke up, than it was already break time. I had to prepare
my self for the break fast. I then discovered that I got porridge was
already over. I had to look for hot water to enable me take something
that could satisfy my empty stomach since there is a saying: "I cannot
work on an empty stomach."

It was lunchtime, when I realized that most of my colleagues were not
around. I decided to take a walk around the school because I was very
bored and not in good mood. When I went to the Common Room, I had some
noise produced by loud speakers, so I had to enter in. I found out
that the majority of the students had come to celebrate Heroes Day
bash at the school. I had to spend sometime in the Common Room. I
later on went for lunch.

It was around 2 P.M when the students went in for a short party dance.
Unlike my colleagues, I went to play football because I was not
physically fit for the dance.

During supper time, the party had to end early enough to enable the
students have their supper in time.

At exactly 7 P.M, boys had to come in to the Common Room for the last
entertainment of that fateful Heroes day celebration.

It was really amazing!

It was a Saturday (the previous one) morning when some sample of drama
was acted by the wildlife club (should have read as World Starts With
Me) members. It was interesting.

To tell you the truth I really banged 'KB'; that is, the show was free
of charge.This was the most wonderful day for me.

To make matters worse (or interesting) some first year student, who
seated just next to me got excited and laughed till he…………………And why
was he laughing? Just because of a PROJECTOR.It was really amazing.

Trainers came from US based organizations: the American Museum of Natural History, the Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE) at Stevens Institute of Technology, and iEARN-USA. In March 2003, Human Rights Watch documented on-going recruitment of children into Local Defence Units (LDUs), which were intended to provide security to local villages, but were reportedly used to fight with the Ugandan People's Defence Forces (UPDF) against the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in northern Uganda, and even in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan. Recent reports from Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers partners on the ground indicated on-going child recruitment into the UPDF, including of children who had escaped from the LRA.

Domestic Violence and Women's Vulnerability to HIV in Uganda
The Ugandan government's failure to protect women from domestic violence and discrimination increases women's risk of contracting HIV. This 77-page report documents widespread rape and brutal attacks on women by their husbands in Uganda, where a specific domestic violence law has not been enacted and where spousal rape is not criminalized. Many women told Human Rights Watch that a fear of violent repercussions impeded their access to HIV/AIDS information, HIV testing, and HIV/AIDS treatment and counseling. The Human Rights Watch report says that HIV/AIDS programs focusing on fidelity, abstinence, and condom use do not account for the ways in which domestic violence inhibits women's control over sexual matters in marriage. In the report, Human Rights Watch urges the Ugandan government to enact domestic violence legislation, and to make women's health, physical integrity, and equal rights in marriage a central focus of AIDS programming.

Renewed War in Northern Uganda
Abductions, torture, recruitment of child soldiers, and other abuses have sharply increased in the past year in northern Uganda due to renewed fighting between Ugandan government forces and rebels, a coalition of national and international organizations. This 73-page report details how a slew of human rights abuses have resulted in a humanitarian crisis. Since June 2002, the rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) has abducted nearly 8,400 children and thousands more adults, a sharp rise from 2001. The LRA has also escalated the seventeen-year war against northern Uganda's civilians by targeting religious leaders, aid providers, and those living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. The report draws on interviews with recently abducted children who escaped from the LRA. It gives voice to internally displaced persons living in the IDP camps that have been attacked by the LRA, and the aid workers attempting to reach these victims despite frequent LRA ambushes on relief convoys.

Stolen Children:
Abduction and Recruitment in Northern Uganda
Children are being abducted in record numbers in northern Uganda by the rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), Human Rights Watch said in a new report released today. The children are subjected to brutal treatment as soldiers, laborers and sexual slaves. Since June of 2002, an estimated 5,000 children have been abducted-a striking increase from 2001, when fewer than 100 children were abducted. In total, an estimated 20,000 children have been abducted during the 16-year conflict between the LRA and the Ugandan government. Children abducted by the LRA are frequently beaten, and forced to carry out raids, burn houses, beat and kill civilians, and abduct other children. They must carry heavy loads over long distances and work long hours as virtual slaves. Many are given weapons training and some are used to fight the Ugandan army, the Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF). Girls are sexually enslaved as "wives" to LRA commanders, and subjected to rape, unwanted pregnancies, and the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. The LRA uses brutal tactics to demand obedience from abducted children. Children are forced to beat or trample to death other children who attempt to escape, and are repeatedly told they will be killed if they try to run away.

Refugees Living Without Protection In Nairobi And Kampala
"Hidden in Plain View," is based on 150 in-depth interviews with refugees from Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan and elsewhere. Refugees described being subjected to beatings, sexual violence, harassment, extortion, arbitrary arrests and detention. The perpetrators are criminals, persecutors trailing them from their countries of origin, and even the Kenyan police and Ugandan military. The refugees have no option but to sleep on the streets or in unsafe shelters, leaving them vulnerable to violence and illness, according to the Human Rights Watch report. Since international relief efforts are minimal, food is scarce and medical treatment is difficult to obtain.

Uganda: Child Soldiers Global Report 2001
From the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers
There are continuing reports of government recruitment of child soldiers despite legislation to the contrary. Several opposition forces, especially the Lord's Resistance Army, forcibly abduct children as young as nine who are compelled to fight and to serve as domestics and sex slaves. In April 2001 the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reported that about one third of the more than 26,000 cases of abduction recorded to date in Uganda involved children under the age of 18.[2] In February 2001, child soldiers recruited from the Democratic Republic of Congo were handed over to UNICEF by the Government of Uganda for reunification with their families. However, an agreement between the governments of Sudan, Uganda, Egypt and Canada has seen little progress in freeing children held by the LRA in camps located in Sudan.

Uganda: Government Human Rights Commissions in Africa
The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), established under the 1995 constitution, is a permanent independent body with quasi-judicial powers. It is one of the most active and autonomous state commissions in Africa, contributing significantly towards the respect of human rights, despite limited resources. The UHRC has broad powers that allow it to subpoena information, order the releases of detainees, and order payment of compensation for abuses, but it may not intervene in cases pending before a court. The UHRC has generally fostered a collaborative working relationship with local and international human rights groups and has not shied away from taking on sensitive issues such as abuses by the security forces. The commissioners have publicly called on other government agencies to take action in a number of areas including a treason trial, abductions, police brutality, and prison conditions.

Key developments since March 1999: The Mine Ban Treaty entered into force for Uganda on 1 August 1999. There have been allegations of Ugandan use of mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly in the June 2000 battle for Kisangani. Uganda denies any use. There is evidence of use of antipersonnel mines in 1999 and early 2000 by Lord's Resistance Army rebels entering Uganda from Sudan. There is no organized mine clearance underway in Uganda, but mine awareness activities are better coordinated and expanding. Mine casualties dropped significantly in 1999. Uganda has not submitted its Article 7 report, due on 28 January 2000.

Children Abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda
In northern Uganda, thousands of children are victims of a vicious cycle of violence, caught between a brutal rebel group and the army of the Ugandan government. The rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) is ostensibly dedicated to overthrowing the government of Uganda, but in practice the rebels appear to devote most of their time to attacks on the civilian population: they raid villages, loot stores and homes, burn houses and schools, and rape, mutilate and slaughter civilians unlucky enough to be in their path. The rebels prefer children of fourteen to sixteen, but at times they abduct children as young as eight or nine, boys and girls alike. They tie the children to one another, and force them to carry heavy loads of looted goods as they march them off into the bush. Children who protest or resist are killed. Children who cannot keep up or become tired or ill are killed. Children who attempt to escape are killed. In effect, children abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army become slaves: their labor, their bodies and their lives are all at the disposal of their rebel captors.

The Bishop of Kumi Diocese the Rt Rev Thomas Edison Irigei (pictured left while listening to the former Headteacher of Ngora High School, Mr Kad Oliba) has told students that good discipline can find them good jobs. Speaking at the retreat of children sponsored by Church of Uganda in Ngora High School main hall today, Irigei said,"Good discipline will find you a job. Bad behavior can make you go to jail, bad behavior can make you get suspended from school, and you can be expelled and disturbed..."

The bishop amused the people when he said: "Education is the key to life. Without education, you have no peace. You will be the one asking others, 'where is that bus heading [because you cannot read what is written on the destination tag], or have I been charged the right transport fare?'

"Once you have been chosen to be at school, work very (very) hard.." Bp. Irigei who expressed his thanks to the team from UK, encouraged the sponsored children.

HIV Serology

This morning I rode to MIDAS Touch Medical Services for HIV Serology. The lab on serology was non-reactive. Thereafter, I set to leave. On my way to Shell, on the right, I saw Mr Stephen Ariko (my OB at Kumi University) selling in a shop. I swallowed a Sprite (from him) and I bought Doom (3.5/=). He advised me to get Kerosene (which I wanted to get from Shell) from Pearl Fueling station. I got 5 liters for myself at 9,400/=.

After which, I got to Stanbank en got some 50 and was given a lift by Lazaro Olaboro, SendTheCow 'boy", to Maraka "Current's" culvert. Crossed via Jimmy's place. Then to Ngora High School.

Headteacher Inquires Who I am

It was around 11:00am when the Headteacher of Ngora High School
inquired from me whether I am the one to attend the interview by the
Education Service Commission on Friday, 16 November at Soroti School
of Comprehensive Nursing.

"Are you Mr Okoed [Martin] who is to do the interview?" Mr Okiria
Martin Obore inquired while I was doing some photocopying for Mrs
Janet Ojulong in the Secretary's office.

"Yes, Sir," I replied politely. "You have been shortlisted under
Ngora Girls Secondary School," he continued. Then I asked him when the
interview would be conducted. "The interview will done on 16
November...," he answered.

However, in a related development the Deputy Headteacher, Mr Moses
Ennu, advised the staff who applied to the Education Service
Commission for the teaching posts, to contribute money. He said the
money contributed would be used by one person for going to Soroti to
check on the program line up for the Interview process.

"Align Your Heart with ME and Wait For My Presence"

"You can't go forth in this hour without My presence, so you must wait for the positioning of My presence."

Last week at our Tuesday morning prayer, the Lord began to establish His presence in a new way among us. In this time of new beginnings, we must not presume that we know where the "Ark of His Presence" is moving. We must wait and watch with expectancy to see how He would have us advance into our next war.

On that Tuesday morning, God began by having us stand very quietly, so we could hear our heart beat. I would encourage you to listen carefully for your heartbeat. Ask for a realignment of your heart desires with His heart desires. Then ask the Lord for you to hear the stillness of the Heavens. In the midst of your chaos, ask Him to let you hear the stillness of His shadow. Ask Him to let you hear sounds you have not heard. Tell Him you are listening, and let Him circulate the atmosphere of Heaven around you. Ask Him to bring and activate your atmospheric change.

Let the cares of the day slip away, so you hear the will of Heaven. Don't go out in your own strength. Wait for the pulsating heart of God to propel the blood in your heart, forth. Some of you are contending over how others are moving forward. Some of you are being awakened with anxiety, and you are questioning how you will ever get everything done so you can advance into your best, in days ahead.

Prophetic Word of the Lord

Then I heard the Lord say, "My heart is not anxious. Wait for My heart to align yours. Stay in time with My heartbeat. Sit before Me and listen now, and you will be energized to bring everything into order that seems confusing and bringing disarray in your life. The beating of My heart positions My Ark. You can't go forth in this hour without My presence, so you must wait for the positioning of My presence. Give Me space. If you walk too quickly, you will stumble. Let the Ark go before you.

In My presence you will be surefooted. In My presence you will see your way. In My presence you will see your enemy. So look up, for the Heavens are clear. Even though there is fog and debris in your path, the Heavens are clear before you. In My presence you're aware of all of your surroundings. You know when to turn right and when to turn left. 'Your' scheduling of time is allowing the enemy to come in and find a way to change time and set legalistic structures. You are not choosing the best.

The best is what My heart has for you. Allow My heart to beat within you, so that best can be yours. I am a God that can move just as easily behind you as in front of you. Align yourself with Me, and I will open up the way and will guard your mistakes so they do not catch up with you again.

Don't cross the ford of the next stream in front of you too quickly. It is deceptive, and deeper than you know. Allow My presence to go before you, and you will see the bottom of that place become a way before you. You will see dry ground before you step into the river that would attempt to sweep you away. Let My presence prepare the way before you.

I will be able to redirect you to move to the right and then to the left to avoid the crash that is already in your path. That which would hit you head on will find its way past you, and you will find the path that will bring you fulfillment in your life.

The concern you have over supply is driving you out of time and driving you ahead of what I have for you. Stay in My presence so you can see the path of supply that is ahead of you.

Many of you are seeking deliverance, but that path has not formed and My Ark has not entered your path yet. Wait until you see My presence beginning to transform and open up and do surgery, then deliverance will come quickly. My path is a path of freedom. It is not one that I would have you strive to enter and walk in.

Now My heart will beat with yours, for you have crossed over into a new beginning. Let My Ark go first! Let My Ark go before you. This will be a time of starting and stopping. Because of the new beginning you are in, you must start and stop with Me. You must not try to come up without Me calling you to come up. You must not go to a platform that I do not call you up upon, for the winds would be too brisk for you there. The winds would be too strong for you and you would blow away instead of standing to see your next step.

Don't celebrate too quickly before Me. Watch and wait, and you will see yourself celebrating; you will see the victory ahead and will be liberated into the fullness of the next war that I have for you."

WHY DO MEN LIE TO WOMEN?

I read a lot of stories from disgruntled women on my "Ask Mr. Answer Man" message board about men who lie and destroy the trust in their relationships. I don't defend men for behavior that is detrimental to building honesty and love. But I do think that it is useful to give women some perspectives on how they can understand men better.

The following reasons are why men choose to lie instead of telling the truth to women. My hope is that you will come to understand men better and lay down the groundwork for a more honest and trustworthy love relationship in the future.

1. SOME MEN DON'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH LYING: This means that some guys are just liars and that's what they do best. Evidently, these men don't see how a lack of trust will undermine any love relationship. But since they've never examined the issue, they will continue to lie because it has helped them achieve their short-term objectives in the past.

2. WHAT THEY LIE ABOUT IS NOT IMPORTANT: Sometimes, a guy will slip and say something that isn't totally true because it is not very important to them. If the thing they are lying about is of little consequence to them, then what's the big deal? It's part of the freedom of doing and saying whatever they want, whenever they want.

3. SHE WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND AND WOULD MOST LIKELY MAKE IT WORSE: This is probably the biggest reason why men lie. By telling the truth, their fear is that the woman will evaluate solely from her point-of-view and not consider his side of the story. Rather than deal with this situation, a guy will often tell what he sees as a "little white lie" in order to avoid setting off a chain-reaction of other unwanted emotions in the woman. However, this also becomes a convenient "excuse" for men that justifies their negative actions and minimizes the "wrong" of lying.

4. SHE REALLY CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH. Along the same lines, the man may have a conviction that the woman cannot manage her upsets. If he lives with that woman, then it makes life at home totally miserable. If the relationship is already unstable, this added upset may lead to complete chaos.

5. IT'S BETTER TO NOT SAY ANYTHING AT ALL. A lot of men see that lying by omission is a less offensive way of avoiding the truth. If the subject is not brought up at all or stonewalled immediately, then maybe the issue will go away or be dealt with when the reference is outdated and emotions have simmered down.

6. MEN WILL LIE NOW AND HOPE THAT THINGS WILL CHANGE LATER. Lying is often a short-term solution to avoiding confrontation. Some men feel that a little bit of lying now will avoid that confrontation and that maybe things will change in the future and this will all become a non-issue to the woman. In addition, lying is a selfish way to protecting the liar without considering the other person's best interests.

7. SOME GUYS LIE BECAUSE THE TRUTH ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH. In the effort to impress a woman and show a proud front, a man will often exaggerate, distort, or delete certain truths. That's because the truth about them may not be good enough in the man's opinion to hold the attention/affection of the woman in a competitive dating world. Once this pattern is established, a man may continue until his lies are discovered.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Lying destroys trust in a relationship. And a lack of trust can ruin even the most promising love affairs. The best you can do is make trust the higher priority and demonstrate that honesty and caring can go together when both men and women approach their challenges with emotional maturity...

It was in my senior two or senior three, when we were attending Chemistry. The person who was teaching us was a lady, Jessica, a student teacher. Was she from…Ngetta National Teachers' College? No, I can't recall now. Then all of a sudden her supervisor came in.

She quickly organized for him where to sit and she continued. I stand to be corrected. I think that is what my friends the teachers call teaching practice or school practice.

Time came when she said, "Any questions?" One very stubborn student asked her off what she was teaching. "Madam, what is closing stock?" he asked. Such a question should be asked in a Commerce lesson.

She made a mistake by attempting to answer the question. Mama…she fidgeted, she sweated…eh. Instead of picking her handerkerchief, she picked a duster to clean her face. Chalk dust was all over her face! Students burst out laughing…

The secrets of our body language have been and will be around forever yet people constantly fail to recognize the importance of using body language to their advantage. Did you know that people only pay attention to 7% of what we say?

A significant amount of the communication that goes on between people is non-verbal. According to Professor Albert Mehrabian's communications 55/38/7 model, 7% of meaning is in the words that are spoken, 38% of meaning is paralinguistic (the way that the words are said). A whopping 55% of meaning is in the speaker's facial expression and body language.

Below are the seven Body language tips that will help you when you're interacting. Leave a
lasting positive impression on whoever you meet.

Always look at the face. Always look at someone directly in their eyes when they are speaking to you. This may seem difficult at first but it's definitely the number one body language ingredient to make you successful when interacting with others.

I have said looking directly in ones eyes. Do not ever stare at someone. You will scare them and they'll have a wrong impression about you.

Always stand up straight. You never want to stoop. Not only does this make you appear shorter but it projects an image of someone who has low self-esteem. Is that the way you want others to perceive you? Certainly, not. Then why not always stand up straight when talking to someone?

Smile. Smiling is your most powerful body language signal. Let me tell you. When you smile at a person, it's like you're saying to that person, 'I like you'. Though it is not recommended to smile constantly (people will be under the impression you are searching for approval), you should still make an effort to appear happy and optimistic. No one wants to associate with pessimists.

Do not make repeated, nervous like gestures. When speaking to someone it's important to use body movements but never fast and repetitive ones. I want you to picture someone who is nervous while public speaking. Yes, this is exactly what you're not aiming for. Is it?

Create your own personal space. Make sure you let others know you have your own personal space.
And do not let them walk all over you. Remember, you never want to invade someone else's personal space. What you only want is create your own personal space.

Be attentive. Dedicate all of your attention to the person you are speaking with. Avoid constantly looking around. When you constantly look around it gives an impression that you are uncomfortable or not interested in what the other person is telling you. Give the person your full attention.

Emphasize. Make sure to emphasize all of these tips when you meet someone new. First impressions count for a lot. If you seem not to understand what the other person is talking about paraphrase what has been said.

Most people find it difficult to be listeners. They want to be fast, 'convincing talkers.' This doesn't work if you, particularly, want to influence people. To earn someone' trust and respect, faster, you can do it by listening rather than by talking, talking. You want to make the best impression you can.

Most people are unaware of the way they are projecting themselves because in general, people will detect body language signals subconsciously. Make an effort to apply all seven of these guidelines and people will react differently when you are speaking to them. But remember to send me a congs message, okay?

The District Education Officer of Bukedea district, Peter Auruku, has appealed the NGOs to spearhead the development of a curriculum on domestic violence.

Auruku said this early last week in Kumi. "There is no syllabus to be followed in schools to teach students the roles of family members: fathers, mothers and children. NGOs should come up to support the development of a syllabus which will include counselling techniques and the roles of family members [in an effort to reduce domestic violence]," he said.

He says domestic violence is greatly caused by sexual deprivation. "Psychologists says 75% of domestic violence results from sexual deprivation, "Auruku said.

He says if churches and NGOs do not do something regarding the causes of domestic violence then it will still have to be experienced.

"If Churches shy away from teaching people about sex. And NGOs too shy away from teaching people about sex and consider it sacred, we will continue to have the same problems [of domestic violence].

"There are people who are experiencing domestic violence in their marriages because they were cursed by their parents. So we should do something to address the realities we are faced with... " he added.

TEACHER IMPREGNATES OWN DAUGHTER

A Teacher of Oteteen Primary School in Ngora Sub County, Peter Okwii, is in hiding for allegedly defiling and impregnating his 17 year old first born girl.

It is reported that Okwii's incest was revealed recently by Margaret Acam, a mother of eight, who happens to be his wife.

"It was on Saturday (November 4) when Acam was asked by the pastors to take an oath to prove that she had truly found her husband and their daughter playing sex which could have caused the girl's pregancy," said one member of Christ Disciples Church in Oteteen Village.

Sources say that when time came to the daughter identified as Sarah to take an oath, she just confirmed that it was true her mom found her father eating the forbidden fruit at some time.

Okwii who is said to have been in the same church reportedly broke to tears after confessing his bad manners. "He[Okwii] and the daughter were excommunicated henceforth. They confessed by their own mouths and with their own mouths they confessed," a source said.

Residents say that Sarah has since then been relocated to Serere in Soroti district where she is alleged to be staying with one of her aunties.

Acam was overhead saying that it is not the first time she got her husband with daughter red handed. That she used to nab him shafting the daughter in their bed. And he could then threaten to lynch her if she dares to reveal the nasty things he was doing. So out of fear she could not reveal.

Besides, it is also said that she feared to nail her husband publicly because he could easily lose his job and life would turn out to be hard for the family.

But heavens broke loose when she learnt that Sarah was ballooned by her father and they were planning to have an abortion. "She vowed to expose her husband's dirty linen, which she did any way," a source close to the family said.

Some parents in the area say, "He[Okwii] should be struck off the teaching profession because the pupils he teaches can learn his wicked acts."

Efforts to hear from the OC Police Ngora were futile as his phone was off during press time.

BODA BODAS ARE THE TOP DEFILERS

The World Population Foundation (WPF) consultant Alex Okwaput has said boda bodas are the number one defilers in the country followed by the teachers.

Okwaput, who is also a teacher in Bishops Secondary School in Mukono district, was speaking at an exhibition of The World Starts With Me (WSWM) Clubs of Ngora Girls SS and Ngora High School.

The exhibition that was the first of its kind in the district, was held at Ngora High School on November 5.

He said teenage pregnancies, child abuse and HIV/AIDS infections are more prevalent in young people than in old people.

"According to a survey carried out in Mukono district early this year, boda bodas are the number one defilers followed by the teachers," said the consultant.

According to Okwaput, the WSWM program which is in 21 districts and in 51 schools is being implemented by SchoolNet Uganda and funded by the WPF. He says that the beneficiary schools are expected to be 100 by the end of next year.

"The program which is also in Kenya, fully blown in Indonesia and Thailand, is a digitalized curriculum on the sexual reproductive health of adolescents. It was developed by the students, teachers and health experts," he said.

He says that some times students misbehave because they have health problems.

"There is a girl who didn't want to be in the company of other children. But after attending this program of the WSWM, she opened up...This girl's vagina was blocked right from her her birth.

"She could not have normal menstruation. They [her periods]were painful....In fact, she has been operated four times....And she's a little fine now," the consultant said.

"This is a do or die curriculum. Next time [when yo will be holding your second exhibition] invite people who have no idea of this sexual reproductive health program....And for God's sake be role models, our ambassadors...Don't preach what you don't practice. Walk the the talk," he appealed to the students.

"There are things I have not been knowing. I have learnt them from this exhibiton," the host headteacher, Kad Oliba, confessed.

Meanwhile the WSWM national facilitator, Moses Agwisagye, said "When you begin suspecting that you have HIV/AIDS; there is only one solution. Turn up for an HIV/AIDS test...You will be given results very religiously."

NAMING A BABY: WHO DECIDES THE NAME?

Modesta, a pregnant woman was being carried to the hospital on a bicycle by her husband, Henry. Then half the way she couldn’t continue sitting on the bicycle due to the terrible labor pains she was experiencing.

Fortunately, some man comes driving his Toyota double cabin. He was stopped by the helpless husband responsible for the pregnancy. He enquired what the problem was. Before he received any explanation he noticed that the woman – whom he saw pregnant – was in great pain.

So he rushes the expectant mother to the hospital’s maternity unit where safe delivery and management would be ensured.

Fine, they reached and were given special attention by the midwives not knowing that it wasn’t the car owner’s wife. So they tried helping her. But she failed to have a normal delivery.

It was her fourth pregnancy. And she’d gone for antenatal services once. And yet “it’s recommended that a pregnant woman should go to the health facility at least four times for check up,” says Gladys Amado, a Clinical Instructor.

What happened is that she was to undergo a caesarean operation. By this time the good Samaritan who had incidentally forgotten his phone in the maternity was gone. This Henry didn’t have enough money. His wife’s condition was worsening. He couldn’t do much. Henry sat down hopelessly as beads of tears rolled down his cheeks.

But luck was on his side. The other man (their savior) who helped them reach the maternity drove back to pick his phone. He saw Modesta’s condition, got moved and sacrificed the pocket money he was taking to his daughter for the helpless woman’s life to be saved.

Luckily enough the operation was successful with a bouncing baby boy weighing 4.9 kilograms brought to the world safely. Every person who saw Modesta’s baby got surprised. “I didn’t know the time my wife was rolled to the hospital theatre. I did not know completely…” said Henry. At this moment Modesta’s savior was still around. His name was Michael.

The couple requested Michael to give them some ample time to look for money so that they could refund. “Look for that money. But when you get it use it for bringing up the baby,” Michael told the couple and wished them well. After a week, Modesta was discharged.

Trouble begun when time came for naming the newly born baby. Henry’s mom thought that the decision of choosing the family name for the child still lay in her hands. But Henry and Modesta had a different thought as a couple.

For them they’d resolved to name their son after Michael who helped them greatly. For them naming their child after Michael was the only way they could reward him. This didn’t go well with Henry’s mother although his father was supportive.

“How do you name a baby after a Mugwere? Aren’t there other better names in our Iteso tribe?” she complained to her son. “That Modesa (she was meaning Modesta) of yours must have bewitched you to give my grandson that name…”

She was complaining bitterly like that not knowing that Michael had told Henry how he got a Mugwere’s name. Michael’s father had a best friend of his who was a Mugwere. So Michael’s dad named his son (Michael) after his late friend.

This brings us to the great question; of the friends, parents and the couples, who should decide on the name to be given to the baby? Here are responses from a cross section of people I interviewed.

“It is the husband who’s to decide on the name of the child. The reason is that I am under him. I can suggest the name but he can refuse…” says Malisa Ijalait, a housewife, in her late 30s.

Simon, 26, a dentist says, “When you go to social psychology, if I can remember, cultures and beliefs change over time. The culture and belief of grandmothers naming children will come to an end. And I think this time it has come to an end already because couples no longer seek approval from their parents. So, my wife and I are the ones to decide on the name our baby should be given.”

“That will be a matter between me and my husband. We discuss it between ourselves, agree and make a final concrete decision on it ourselves,” says Annet Anyait, 13, a primary six pupil.

“It is me if I am present. But when I am not present to give the child a name, my mother can do it because we’re one; she’s the one who produced me,” says Sam Opio, 30, a motorist.

Whereas Jesca Apolot, 36, a restaurant proprietor argues, “It is the man if it’s a name within his clan. But if it is outside his clan; we’ve to agree as a couple. No tricks.”

“That will be the work of my father and mother. If they are not alive; I will take the honor,” reasons Noah Ojilong, 18, a senior two student.

Moses Erimai, 29, a painter says, “It its automatic; the husband since he’s the head of the family.”

“It is entirely the responsibility of the grandmothers to give babies names,” says Angela Agaya in her 80s. And that boy is the writer’s follower. The question remains: who decides on the name to be given to the baby?

MUSEVENI TO PRESIDE OVER KUMI THIRD GRADUATION CEREMONY

President Yoweri Museveni has expressed his willingness to preside over Kumi University’s third graduation ceremony on 1st December.

The Personal Assistant to the Vice Chancellor who doubles as the acting Public Relations Officer, Mr Joseph Ekodeu Opio, revealed this on Wednesday.

“The Principal Private Secretary to His Excellency has already written to us affirming this. His Excellency the President will be able to preside over the 3rd Graduation Ceremony of Kumi University on 1st December,” Ekodeu said.

“We are happy that the president himself is coming to grace the occasion. It is going to be a very big blessing to Kumi University,” he said and then laughed.

Besides, “the Minister of Education and Sports Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire, Iteso Cultural Leader Emorimor Lemukol Osuban, District officials, university council members, donors and many other guests are expected to come grace the occasion,” says the PRO.

He says the government of South Korea has also expressed her interest in seeing the university reach its heights of remarkable achievement.

“The government of South Korea has showed interest in helping the university. They want to see to it that it realizes its vision…And in fact, they will be sending at least one representative…” he said.

Earlier on this reporter was taken round the campus on a guided tour by the Public Relations Officer. “There are serious preparations going on,” said Ekodeu while pointing at the one block being painted.

However, the Assistant Academic Registrar, Mr David Abala, says over 300 graduands will be graduating with certificates, diplomas and degrees in various fields.

“300 plus will be graduating with certificates, diplomas and bachelors in Guidance and Counseling, Development Studies, Education, Social Work and Social Administration, Community Development, Information Technology, Business Administration…” he said.

The Assistant Academic Registrar urges those who completed their courses in the last four years to turn up for registration before 15th November so that they can graduate.

CANDIDATE COMES LATE, MISSES UNEB EXAM

One Candidate in Teso Integrated Secondary School Examination center missed his Wednesday morning paper for failure to keep time.

“George Olinga came late for the Biology paper (imagine) after we had sealed envelops. I don’t know whether he was dreaming or what,” says David Asiata the Center’s chief invigilator.

Asiata says that after learning that Olinga was not in the examination room, he notified the school administration.

“Immediately I learnt that he was not in, I alerted the school’s Headteacher. They tried to look for him before the fifteen minutes elapsed; they failed and gave up. Then the candidate arrived at around noon – very late for the paper.

“He tried to plead but I could not help him. Helping him would mean compromising with UNEB Directions to Candidates,” Asiata says.

“…Any candidate who comes more than 15 minutes late from the start of an examination will not be allowed to sit the examination…” insists the chief invigilator.

It was not possible to hear from Olinga since he was in for a paper during press time. However, some sources say that he delayed because he woke up late.

OC CID WARNS RAPISTS

The Soroti district Criminal Investigations Officer, Fred Mugungu, has warned men who buy women beers and later on force them to have sex with them.

Mugungu says, “If you want to have [sex with] a woman you need to seek her consent. Do not buy her beers. Then when the lady is drunk; she cannot do anything to protect herself, you take advantage of her drunkenness.”

He said, “…having sex with a woman without her consent…is rape [a criminal offense].”

The officer also cautioned women against accepting to be bought beers any how. He urged them to protect themselves against rapists by avoiding moving alone at night and wearing tempting attire.

OONYU WARNS HEALTH WORKERS ON CARELESSNESS

The Ngora County Health Educator, Charles Oonyu, has warned over 100 health workers who will be involved in the mass measles immunization.

Oonyu was speaking during the closure of the two days workshop on Supplementary Immunization Activities and Accelerated Routine Immunization Activities held at Ngora Freda Carr Hospital.

“From 10th to 12th November, all children aged six months to five years will be immunized against measles. You’ll be expected put into practice the skills that you have been learning from here…Administer the vaccines well. Otherwise you might cause the some children to become lame,” he said on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Ngora County Health Inspector, William Ojulong, called upon the local councilors to cooperate.

“LCs we trust you. You will help us to mobilize community members to bring all the children [from six months to five years] for immunization against the infectious disease; measles,” Ojulong said.

Dealing With YOUR Anger

Recently, I was chatting with one of my female colleagues called Faith. How do you know youre angry? I asked. She laughed and then said, I dont get angry. Why have you posed such a question to me? Is it cause Im ever happy? she wondered.

Faith is such a jolly lady who wears smiles almost every time. And there are people, out there, of her kind. But that doesnt mean that smiling machines never get annoyed.

How you act when you are angry can make the situation better or worse, says Stephen Onyait, a Psychology lecturer at Kumi University.
He says, You may get angry when something doesnt go your way. May be you get mad at yourself when your team loses an important game. When you have heard time, says James Ebenu Ojangole, a Nursing Officer at Kapir sub dispensary.

Now imagine a situation whereby your sweetheart has annoyed you. What would you do to help yourself out? Fight? Probably no.
Psychologists and counselors recommend that you:
· Breathe deeply and slowly. Be sure your breath comes from your diaphragm not
chest.

· Speak out for yourself when someone is not treating you properly.

Therefore, whenever you are angry, try to deal with your anger constructively. Youre the rational person to control it. No other person can do it. Dont let anger control you. It can break your relationship.

POVERTY IS STILL ALARMING IN TESO

KUMI County FDC MP, Hon. Eng. Patrick Amuriat Oboi, has told residents of Kumi district that poverty is still biting hard in Teso Sub region.

Amuriat said this on Monday while giving his speech at Kumi Boma grounds.

Today the 9^th October, were celebrating our 44^th independence anniversary. But it is unfortunate that poverty is still alarming in our Teso sub region, he said, According to UBOS [Uganda Bureau of Statistics] recent survey findings, poverty in the region is at 65%. What development is that?

Amuriat who spoke as the Chairperson, Teso Parliamentary Group, decried the poor attitude many people have towards saving and urged them to develop saving habits.

Many people have a poor culture of saving for tomorrow. We all need to develop the culture of saving something from the very little we get daily; in a bid to avert poverty, the chairperson said.

He challenged politicians with political propaganda who intimidate the electorate that the national cake is only for those who voted Mr Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on February 23, 2006 presidential elections.

There are some politicians who think that politics is for every day. They tell people that you will not get [a share of the national cake]. That is a lie. We have a constitutional right to a share of the national cake even if we didnt vote Museveni, he said.

He further questioned the development that is said to be in the region and yet there is no peace, good health facilities, economic empowerment, leadership and governance.

What development is this without peace? What development is this without good health facilities?without economic empowerment?without good leadership and governance? he wondered.

Before he sat, he requested the mistress of ceremony that the Kumi Woman MP Hon Agnes Akiror who came late, be given a chance to say a word.

Prosperity for all is not for household level only. It must include politics and governancethe issue of the 60 million that is raising dust was not discussed in parliament. That was only discussed by the Movement MPs in their caucus Akiror said.

What you will need to do is to raise our number [of FDC MPs] in 2011 so that we can be in a better position to debate favorably, she added.

Meanwhile, the Kumi district Movement LC5 Chairperson, Ismail Orot, amused people when he attributed peoples being many to his being the guest of honor.

People are many in this occasion because they quickly learnt that I was to be the guest of honor, Orot said, I am going to add it to my CV.

We have to fight corruption. The 60 million that the MPs are demanding is a sign of being corrupt. Such money should be sent to the districts.

He said that Iteso are the wisest people who go straight to jobs unlike others who are fixed to Uganda Revenue Authority after their senior four and told to go to Kyambogo University for evening classes.

Orot further said, There are no more Karimojong raids in the district since I got to the office of LC5 Chairperson.

S.SUDAN IS THE FIRST BENEFICIARY, SAYS AKONOPESA

THE author of O'Level Physics Onya Akonopesa has said southern Sudan is the first beneficiary of the second edition of his book, reports Martin Okoed

Akonopesa said this on Wednesday while addressing students of Ngora High School on "Education: Values and Challenges"

"The first copies of the second edition of my physics' book have been taken to southern Sudan because of its being student friendly," he said.

He said the new book was developed from the first edition between June and December 2005. "The book was revised between June and December of last year by me, a human being like you [students]," Akonopesa said.

He told students that it's education that is the best way to fight poverty. "Education is the only best way to fight the poverty people are preaching about."

He urged the students and particularly the candidates to work hard for better results. "I want to be frank to you especially to S.4s and S.6s. Many people out there expect better results from you. I am the only one who is daring to tell you now that people expect better results from you," he added.

He, however, said the students who want to take any medical course need to pass chemistry otherwise they would be wasting time applying for such courses thinking that prayers can work.

NGORA GIRLS' SS GETS COMPUTERS

THE headmistress of Ngora Girls' Secondary School Margaret Asekenye on Friday said the school has got 19 computers.

"Right now the school has 19 computers. Ten of which were bought through Schoolnet Uganda, two from Kumi University, two were a donation from Church of Uganda and the other five were acquired from the open market," Asekenye said.

"Out of the 25 teachers in the school," she said, "eight know how to use the computer. Two and three of the eight were trained by Cyber School Technology Solutions in conjuction with the Ministry of Education & Sports and Schoolnet Uganda respectively in a bid to boost science education."

She says the school has already placed an order for more 31 computers through Schoolnet Uganda, which will be used to facilitate the teaching and learning processes by use of information and communication technologies.

She said it is the school's plan to have all its teachers as well as students trained on how to use the computer and more especially on how to use it for learning purposes since the world now has become a global village.

However, students of S.3 and S.4 have started learning computer basics on MS Word and MS Excel.

SUSPECTED THIEVES AND WITCHES VOTED

(NGORA - WEDNESDAY, 27 SEPT) Suspected thieves and witches in Kumi district, Ngora Sub County in Komodo village were on Saturday 23rd September voted out by the locals of the area, report Martin Okoed and Samuel Ejoku

The voting was organized by the area LC1 Chairman Bosco Aebesi, clan leaders and was chaired by the sub county councilor in the district Grace Omoding. Former LC3 Chairman Ngora Sub county Ogellan Agwelapkwap and parish councilors witnessed the exercise.

The exercise was organized when the locals raised complaints to the local authorities that there was increasing theft and witchcraft.

Twenty people were nominated as thieves and witches. At least ten votes qualified one as a real suspect.

During the voting of suspected thieves, Bazil Omutoj polled 193, Joseph Acetun 41, Christopher Ecuru 41, Amagid Omoding 33, Emmanuel Irena 10 with the rest below ten.

On the side of suspected witches Elemu whose name was not identified during the press time got 38, Julius Okurut and Mzee Icakode 30, Joyce Aboo 28. And Esther Amoding polled 13 with the rest below average.

However, drama fell when Francis Apedel a notorious suspect got nine votes when the voters expected more for him during counting time. Local authorities have promised to take quick action upon the suspects.

Fight Weeds with Plant Pathogens

(Friday, September 20, 2006) Plant pathogens may be a successful, eco-friendly tool for managing weeds, the plant pathologists working with APS (The American Phytopathological Society), have said.

"The use of plant pathogens to suppress weeds is considered as one of the alternative weed control options for areas or production systems where the use of chemical herbicides is not permitted or feasible," said Erin Rosskopf, USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Fort Pierce, FL. "Plant pathogens may also be used when the herbicide selection or usage must be rotated with other control methods in order to prevent the development of resistant weeds or lessen the impact of herbicides on the environment," she said.

According to Rosskopf, in APS's press release of September 1, 2006, "there are two approaches used for managing weeds with plant pathogens–the classical biological control approach and the bioherbicides approach. The classical biocontrol approach uses a pathogen imported from a foreign location to control a native or naturalized weed with minimal technological manipulations."

"Classical biological control using imported pathogens has an overall success rate of 57 percent and has been just as successful as the use of imported insects, with no instances of unexpected or undesirable effects," says Raghavan Charudattan, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.

"The bioherbicide approach utilizes native plant pathogens that are isolated from weeds and are grown to produce large numbers of infective propagules (such as spores). Infective propagules are applied at rates that will cause high levels of infection, which will greatly reduce the growth of, or kill the target weed before economic losses are incurred. Annual applications are required since the pathogen does not generally survive between growing seasons. It is estimated that there are more than 200 plant pathogens that have been or are under evaluation for their potential as bioherbicides," concludes the press release.

Bees Like Humans, Can Estimate Time Intervals

Research has showed that bees can estimate time intervals like humans although one can ask how.
"In a finding that broadens our understanding of time perception in the animal kingdom, researchers have discovered that an insect pollinator, the bumble bee, can estimate the duration of time intervals.

"Although many insects show daily and annual rhythms of behavior, the more sophisticated ability to estimate the duration of shorter time intervals had previously been known only in humans and other vertebrates," reports Science Daily.

The research was conducted by Michael J. Boisvert and David Sherry of the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada. The findings appear in the August 22nd issue of the journal Current Biology published by Cell Press, reports Science Daily.

"Bees and other insects make a variety of decisions that appear to require the ability to estimate elapsed durations. Insect pollinators feed on floral nectar that depletes and renews with the passage of time, and insect communication and navigation may also require the ability to estimate the duration of time intervals."

In the new work, supported by a grant from the Natural Science and Engineering Council of Canada, "the researchers investigated bumble bees' ability to time the interval between successive nectar rewards. Using a specially designed chamber in which bumble bees extended their proboscis to obtain sucrose rewards, the researchers observed that bees adjusted the timing of proboscis extensions so that most were made near the end of the programmed interval between rewards.

"When nectar was delivered after either of two different intervals, bees could often time both intervals simultaneously. This research shows that the biological foundations of time perception may be found in animals with relatively simple neural systems," reads the Science Daily.

50 Graduate at UMCAT

UNITED Media Consultants and Trainers (UMCAT) School of Journalism and Mass Communication Ngora Campus on Friday, 15th September held its second graduation ceremony with 50 students being awarded certificates in Basic Principles of Journalism and Mass Communication.

The ceremony was presided over by the Kumi District Internal Security Officer, Mr Richard Oseku, who represented the Minister of State Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Musa Ecweru, said, "Journalism is an important and marketable course."

Mr Charles Ogwel, the Director of UMCAT, said the Ngora Campus would start Public Relations, Public Speaking and Language trends, Human Resource Mangement, Secretarial Studies, Personnel Management, Public Administration and Management programs among others.

He said the School aimed at equipping young women and men with the 21st century skills, professional ethics, managerial and leadership qualities.
UMCAT, with headquarters in Kampala, runs 4 campuses in the whole Uganda.

Ogwel decried the now glaring gap in education in Teso sub region. "There is now a gap in Education in Teso. We have gone far behind in Education. We the Iteso have to wake up to study in order to narrow the gap."

He appealed the leaders of Ngora to give him and his team ideas for the betterment of the Campus. "Leaders of this place we welcome ideas from you so that we can see how this vision [Ngora Branch] can grow.."

To the continuing students, he said, "if you remain patient [with your course], you will eat the fruits of patience. If you become impatient, you will eat the fruits of impatience. That is emptiness."

Ms Doreen Gertrude Alupo, Mr Francis Abwot, Ms Sylvia and Mr Emmanuel Nespol Odongo were the best four graduands.

Uganda’s 2021 President:

SEPTEMBER 15(Ngora, Kumi): "I am here for votes. I told these people
[of Kumi District] that I am in for a contract of 20 years so that
someone [Museveni] will get old somewhere; then I take over [as
president]," were the words of LC V Kumi District, Hon Ismail Orot.

Hon Orot who was invited to Uganda Media Consultants and Trainers
(UMCAT) School of Journalism and Mass Communication Ngora Branch 2nd
graduation ceremony held on Friday, 15th September, arrived late.

"I am sorry to be late. It is not always my hobby to be late…" he said
when asked by the master of ceremony to greet his electorate.

He has in many occasions told the electorate that he wants to be in
the LC V office for only 20 years after which he would be the one to
lead Uganda as president in 2021. Orot who was never successful in his
attempts to become a Constituency Assembly Delegate and MP, didn't
give up in 2001 for the LC V seat where he eventually succeeded. And
in 2006 election, he was reelected LC V.

The Uganda's 2021 president says that it was because of courage that
he won the 2001 election let alone the sick leg that he had which
still makes him limp a little sometimes.

He said the graduands had taken the right course. "I would like to
assure you: without journalists, we politicians would be no where.
They are the ones who sell us a lot. I didn't come with one because I
knew I would find them here," he said and people laughed.

He says that when he, with other people, went to DR Congo's Garamba to
talk to LRA's chief Joseph Kony in August to end the LRA war in
northern and eastern Uganda, they spent four days without bathing and
were only brushing teeth.

Meanwhile, a person whose name couldn't be established during press
time was heard by our reporter saying, "…the man [Hon Orot] was asked
to greet the electorate…now he has turned it to a campaign…people!"

Journalism, An Important Course

Journalism is one of the important and marketable courses, reports

certificate in Basic Principles of Journalism and Mass Communication
on Friday, 15th September.

"Journalism, I want to recognize, is one of the most important courses
as far as enlightening society is concerned. This is because they
[journalists] dwell on gathering information and feeding it to the
community," he said.

He said man at all times needs information because even in biblical
times there were scribes. "In the event of where there is no
information, people resort to rumors and speculations. It is not for
nothing; but because they need news. That is why Journalism [and Mass
Communication] is important," the DISO said.

Although he urged the graduands to be patriotic as far as their noble
duty as journalists was concerned, he warned them against compromising
with the professional ethics of journalism, as that would bring
disrepute to the profession.

"As journalists, you've to be informed…honest…Research and highlight
the problems that affect society…promote accountability of leadership
and programs implemented in society…" he added.

Why Children Take Sides in Family Disputes

In my village, we had a man who could go drinking enguli as well as pombe. And whenever he came back, he went straight to his dowry (he called his wife’s body, dowry). This man could batter his dowry with anything he came across. From sticks to iron rods, anything was his weapon.

Their two bulls (I mean boys) were too young to help and didn’t know what was going on either. So the poor woman kept on suffering for some time in the hands of the hostile man.

No neighbor never ever dared to separate this couple whenever they had their games. I call their games because it was a common happenstance. The woman was suffering, yes, I could witness. But if you’re offended just because I call it a game, sincerely, I am sorry. It’s up to you if you cannot forgive me.

But I remember approaching the lion one day. I don’t recall clearly how I started our conversation. I knew I was risking. I asked: “…Jeptha (I have not used his true name for security reasons), if you were your wife ever tortured like she’s ever tortured by you, how would you be feeling?” I thought he would say maybe I needed his wife.

The man kept mum. By then he had not swallowed any dose. He cleared his pipe then looked at me shyly and said, “I would feel bad, anyway” he added, “but I don’t know why I beat my dear wife…” I smiled internally because dowry had turn out to be dear. I could see success in my negotiation.

“You’ve to think twice, please. Your wife should be dear to you. Your children will one time beat you or you’ll beat your dowry to death,” I told him in a low tone. Their two children were grown up then. They were around 12 years old and were twins. And had three other children.
One day this king of the jungle went soaking himself with booze, mixed it up with dubai (this is how my OB’s who were smokers called cigarettes). When he came home, he started beating the ka woman. The woman yelled out, “come rescue me…from this [Idi] Amin…my children…” I don’t know why she chose to call him Amin, not Binaisa or Ssebagala. Perhaps you can guess.

By the time she was crying out for help, she’d overpowered her man. It seems booze had weakened him this time thoroughly well. She had thrown the guy down and his chest was the dowry’s seat. So the enraged children ran fast enough to their mama’s rescue.

They beat him and left him almost dead. The man bled. But one good thing with the wife was that she was empathetic enough. She made sure her husband was taken to the health facility where he got treatment.

There are many reasons why children take sides in family disputes. Battering is one of them. Am sure you will not ask me how. Why? I have just been telling you what used to happen in my village, which I don’t want you to know. (Am not saying you want to know.) We’ve only…(as if one bicycle). And it’s even lousy.

Including children in your spousal misunderstanding can make children take sides. Some divorced spouses have a tendency of causing their children to side with him or her. Yet most children don’t have the emotional maturity to solve the problem.

For heaven’s sake “if you have a conflict with your former spouse, discuss it with him or her not your child,” emphasize Habermas and Olshine in their book titled How To Have Real Conversation With Your Teen.

Then there is also an inclination for some parents, even when they’re able, not to provide for children’s needs. What do you think children can do to a family member who’s a Kony to a person who’s providing for their needs?

Neglecting teenagers’ hurts, concerns and questions can cause trouble in your kingdom. When you don’t listen to your kids, their hurts, concerns, and questions, know that your forthcoming peace talks won’t be successful.

Dr Riek Machar will be there, all right. But he’ll walk away in protest. And the children will terrorize you…

For the other guy, my countryman (village mate) who was beaten hands down by his off springs and wife is now water. I can now believe the Kiswahili saying which goes: Dawa ya moto ni moto.

Teachers Urged To Study Computer

THE Headteacher of Ngora High School, Mr Kad Oliba, who was chairing an academic staff meeting on Wednesday urged his teachers to take up computer training seriously, reports Martin Okoed.

“Computer is the pen of today…those of you [teachers] who are behind, [have to wake up and] get the courage to learn computer,” he said.

“If you get transferred to Kateta Secondary School [being started in Soroti district]…you might not see a computer for the next ten years,” he added.

He said there was no need for the teachers to be computer illiterate and yet the school had a Telecenter.

The meeting which was conducted in the Physics Lab, started at 10:00am with a short prayer and ended at around 3:20pm.

Soroti People Warned

THE Resident District Commissioner of Soroti, Mr Hebron Omax Omeda, has cautioned the Soroti residents against trespassing.

“People who have been criminally trespassing in Soroti sports ground [and other places] should stop henceforth,” he said on 91.5 KVR FM on Tuesday evening.

Omeda said trespass was rampant in Soroti and that Soroti was going to lose the sports ground because cyclists, motorists as well as pedestrians were spoiling the field.

He urged the District Police Commander, Mr Stephen Onenchan, to be vigilant so that criminal trespassers would be arrested and prosecuted in the courts of law since there was a law on criminal trespass.

He also requested the DPC to look into allegations raised to RDC’s office that some of the police officers were corrupt.

Onenchan says that it’s the people who do not want their relatives to be prosecuted in court who were corrupt.

Kumi University to Host Interuniversity Volleyball Tournament

KUMI University Games and Sports Tutor, Silas O. Oluka, has said the university is to host the interuniversity Volleyball Tournament due for 22nd - 24th September.

He said this last Saturday while officiating the university interyear games between the freshers and continuing students.

"22 universities [in Uganda] have been invited to participate in the tournament. Many of them will definitely turn up because, in a way, they will be readying themselves...putting themselves in full gear for the competition in the East African Universities Games that will be conducted in Kigali, Rwanda from 15th-22nd December this year," Oluka said.

He says that the university was privileged to host the tournament and was making all the necessary arrangements to have it succeed.

"Besides, the university has games and sports scholarships for those who will excel in games and sports. And our dream as a university is to see, or to have, some of our Kumi University products [students] participate in world games...That is why the university instituted the scholarships.

"But there are other scholarships as well for the needy girlchildren, persons with disabilities, orphans..." he said.

"50 of our students will be graduating with certificate in Basic Principles in Journalism and Mass Communication, come September 15," the school Administrator Harriet Okiria has said.

Okiria said the September 15 graduation will be the Ngora Branch's second graduation

"The Ngora County MP Hon. Dr. Francis Epetait, Kumi Woman MP, Hon. Agnes J. Akiror, Rtd Bishop Geresom Ilukor as well as the district officials and many others are to come grace the occasion.
"The minister of State Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Hon. Musa Ecweru will be the guest of honor," the school administrator said this in her office when contacted last Thursday.

UMCAT Ngora Branch is operating in the former Bishop Kitching Community Polytechnic premises where Bishop Kitching College operated before.

The branch was set up by the Director UMCAT school of Journalism and Mass Communication Main Campus (Kampala), Charles Ogwel. It was started in the eve of 2006 member of parliaments' campaigns.

Ogwel who lost the Ngora MP seat to Epetait said the UMCAT program was not political.

"People thought that this program was political…but am planting a seed in Ngora for training watchdogs of society," Ogwel said while addressing the students recently.

He said the program only coincided with the political season but had it in plan before.

Meanwhile, the admissions for the October 2006 intake for certificate and diploma programs are in progress. Programs include Journalism and Mass Communication, Public Relations, Public Speaking and Language trends among others.

"I Survived Narrowly"

KUSAI Opolot, a 15-year-old boy, drunk poison in Kalengo village, Ngora, on 29 August 2006, with an intention to kill himself.

Opolot, a primary six pupil in Tididiek-Okorom Primary school, is said to have asked his father Paul Omoding on Sunday, 27 August around 8:00pm that he needed to visit his mother in Mukura.

Omoding ignored his son's request. On Monday, 28 August he delegated Charles Obelon his first born boy the responsibility of taking Opolot with other grown up children to plant maize in their nearby garden.

"Although Opolot looked angry, he didn't refuse to go to the garden," a family source said.

Very early on Tuesday, 29 August they were asked by their father to go heap potatoes. "Daddy, sent us to the garden to heap potatoes on Tuesday," Obelon said.

"After coming back from the garden...I took the holiday tuition fee he had given me, to Betty [Atai, my elder sister] in Ngora Girls' Secondary school..At about 4:00pm I was already back home. He [Opolot] was resting in our boys' hut.

"It was around 6:00pm when I went to a nearby center [called Tororo] where I was upto around 7:00pm. Then one of my younger brother came running. He told me that the Opolot I had left resting was badly off.

"The way I rushed home! Found vomit that was smelling poison all over the floor of the hut...Mummy was crying... Quick, I ran for a boda boda motor cycle. And at around around 8:00pm we were at Ngora Freda Carr Hospital where his dear life was saved..." Obelon narrated in disbelief.

Opolot declined to make a comment when contacted. But he's said to be remorseful. "Opolot says,'I will never drink poison again...medical personnel who were attending to me say I survived narrowly..." a family source said.

Omoding, a businessman, is a born again Christian. He had married three wives before he got saved. He then sent away only his second and third wives and remained with Rose Anyait, his first wife.

If It Were You, What Would You Do?

ONE of my closest friends, Patrick, had a girlfriend. Her name was Patricia. Tracy dropped Pattie after making him pay her fees at one of the Nursing and Midwifery Training schools in Uganda. He’d paid fees for one and a half solid years.

Bought a phone for his love. It was either a Nokia 6210 or 6310. I can’t remember clearly. It’s quite long now. Yet for him he’d a Nokia 3310. What happened later was that poor Pattie of mine discovered that aka posh businessman was running Tracy.

For Pattie had invested in his girlfriend with whom he didn’t have any serious lawful relationship with, with a hope that in some day to come he would be sharing his future with her. Unfortunately, he had been used as a rubber stamp.

The dear friend, Pattie, whom I still feel with, has hated women. And has even vowed “I shall not have any other business to transact with women.” For him he says, “All women are the same. They’re detoothers and should be eliminated on earth.” If you were Pattie, what would you do?

“…I forget of her and take my time healing,” says Odongo Adwaduar, a turn boy in his mid 40s.

Cuthbert Adotu, a secondary teacher, who excitedly laughed before making his comment says, “For me I would give her a break; divert my resources to something else,” he adds, “Then I get someone else.”

Whereas Jimmy Isale, 27, a teacher, states, “There’s a saying: ‘if something is meant for you, let it free. If it comes back to you, then it is yours.’” Asked what he actually meant, he added, “My response is very clear: I wouldn’t run after her.”

Christine Igoe, a Sign Language Interpreter reasons, “I [would] give her a break. If she loves me then she’ll come [back to me] by herself.”

Hellen Alupo argues, “I would give up anyway. Those are things of the world,” she adds, “I would pray as well.”

“I would ask her to refund some of my money…It’s painful to lose money,” remarks Samuel Ejoku, 22, a Journalist in the making.

A security officer who preferred anonymity says, “Oh, I would ask her to apologize to me. Yet at the same time I don’t think I could take her apology. This is serious … when I recall of the finances I have been dishing out to her!”

“I would kill her. Yes, killing her would be the best solution. That’s all I could do to such a detoother,” asserts Martin Otai, 20, a retailer. If it were you, what would you do?

Old Man Uses Ear For ‘Speaking’ to Audience

SEPTEMBER 3: Ngora High School staff were on Saturday, September 02, 2006 amazed when one of their non-teaching staff, Robert Oribo, put the microphone by his ear when he was asked by the master of ceremony to say a word in their end of term 2 party.

Michael Alibu Obany who was the master of ceremony then saved Oribo. Commonly known as Sheikh Alibaba, Oribo joined Ngora High School in 1967 where serves as the Senior Office Messenger as well as the Duplicating Machine Operator.

“I-I-I-I wish all of you…successful…celebration…and…safe journey…back home,” mumbled the tipsy Alibaba and then wobbled to his drinking pot.

Obany said, “I don’t know what happened. It [the microphone] was on; but he used it as a phone,” then people, including Kad Oliba the Headteacher, again loudly laughed.

“You see, my son, I was not prepared to speak. [And] I’ve never spoken in such a function…” confessed Oribo, when asked by our reporter why he put the microphone by his ear.

Meanwhile, Kad Oliba, the Headteacher, who was the guest of honor, thanked the partying members. “Thank you to everyone for the work well done in the previous term,” he congratulated.

“Tomorrow [today Sunday], we shall be receiving the candidates for holiday tuition. We’ve to work [again] as a team in order to make our work in this school a success,” Oliba urged his staff.

Thereafter, the MC repeatedly requested the casually dressed headmaster to open the dance officially. “Mr Headteacher, please, open the dance officially,” Obany pleaded.

The smiling head of school who took some time before standing up, gestured to the people who were with him at high table to dance with him.

The “… strict, understanding and developmental man” as described by the Rtd. Bishop Geresom Ilukor who had not come with his wife, opened the dance with Emong Johnson Otinga’s Ateso popular traditional track Icurusai Jo Da (You Also Be Doing Business).

Why People Stay in Abusive Relationships

You’ve known people who can batter their spouse till you say to yourself “if it were me I wouldn’t stay with that man or woman.” Yet after the beating the couple is still capable of staying in their relationship without any problem, seemingly!

People don’t stay in abusive, violent relationships just because they want, love to be abused, or have nowhere to go (this is what most people will say when someone is being battered). No.

People stay in abusive relationships for various reasons they believe in. First, their partner’s violence is temporary. However abusive the husband or wife can be, a spouse who believes that the violence is just temporary, won’t leave his or her home. He or she will be there and won’t care.

Second, with their loyalty and love, they can make their partner to change. When someone has a conviction that their partner can change they’ll have no reason to quit from the relationship. So, what does he or she do? Hang around.

Third, their partner when they promise, it will never happen again. What normally happens when somebody promises to give something to you? You become anxious of receiving that promise. Isn’t it? Just like you’ll be anxious of receiving the promise, so also will a spouse be anxious of proving what his or her spouse has promised never to happen. And as such the spouse will not go any where apart from staying in their home. Thereby staying in an abusive relationship!

Fourth, it is their responsibility to keep their family together. When a person feels that its his or her sole responsibility to keep their family together, the person will have no other option apart from staying in the abusive relationship. You’ve known people who’ve represented their constituencies for years and years even if they face, always. It’s that strong feeling of responsibility that we’re talking about. It can cause a person to brave the abusive relationship.

Fifth, there will be more good times. What do you remember of 3rd June? 3rd June is a Martyrs day. Those fellows who were killed in that fateful day duly accepted to die for one major reason. They had a hope that they’d go to where there are no tribulations, Heaven! I hope we’re together. Likewise, people can dare to stay in abusive relationships when they have a hope that more good things and times will come.

Sixth, all women or men are violent and that that is to be expected. As long as a person’s mind is poised this way, he or she will never think of bolting out of the relationship that’s so abusive, violent, name it! You’re getting what I mean, eh? The person will continue to be there.

Seventh, fear of being blackmailed in society due to religious teachings. A person can equally persevere in an abusive relationship when he or she is fearing to be regarded “Unchristian”. This is common in spouses who are wedded in church. Some of them, really, their relationships can be intolerable to the extent that you’d think of flying away from the relationship – throwing the ring away! But because a person is guilty of the marriage vows – you know them – they’re forced to stay in such a horrific relationship, imagine!

So when you see people persevering in relationships, don’t think that they love it or they’ve nowhere to go. No. There’s something holding them, at least.

What Men Don’t Know About Women

A lot of women don’t have a clue as to why they act the way they do. And many men don’t know why women act the way they do until now! It’s vital that men understand the female gender from the following perspective.

The truth is women are too emotional in their thinking. That’s why when somebody is punishing a child severely; they’re quick to speak. They’re the first people to have pity even on a thief being beaten, thoroughly. It was women who bitterly wept when Jesus Christ of Nazareth was being crucified remember? It was those women who visited the tomb after the three days. They felt for Jesus and women’s emotionalism is genuine. Nobody should doubt this.

They’re jealous and suspicious. This is like a thorn in the flesh. But the fact is women are naturally jealous and suspicious of all men. Talk of bishops, all. They’re gifted in smelling rats as far as relationships are concerned. And sincerely, a woman who’s truly, deeply in love can be told from her high level of jealousy and suspicion. We should be aware of this, men.

Women are ever smart and not suicidal. Suicide for a woman – it’s very rare for a woman to kill herself over a man. Yet in their known emotional thinking, they’re very smart (ever smart) in ruining the lives of men. Whether it is the career, ego, self-esteem, or even the bank account, anything. They know every right button to press. Don’t despise women, men. We need not batter them because they’re capable of causing us to pick a rope to commit suicide, unbelievably.

They like pretending. If you want to openly see how pretentious a woman is let her realize that poor you have developed love feelings for her. Even if you’ll be considered some time later she stubbornly has to hurt you, man. True, she can find all ways of hurting the poor you just to see if you can push on then she gives in. but of course, women sometimes forget that there’re other guys who push on just because of hormone testosterone pressure. And as soon as they’ve had sex, pap, they jump off. Whew!

Women are colour conscious. Women are not like men who aren’t concerned about colours. For women colours mean a lot. In fact, their personality can change depending on, for example, their busuuti or kitenge they’re wearing. Or even the room they are in. Guys who have women know what I am talking about. Let time for choosing what to wear come. You know all those processes women go through when readying themselves for a party. They’ll pick this pair. Try it on. Remove it. Ask you “which one really should I wear to the party?” You suggest less concernedly, “this one”. She doesn’t try that, eh! What about?

Women are lucky. Women are luck than the men. For them they can have sex any time they want. After all, its men who die for sex as women die for love. Besides, a male’s body produces 20 times more of the hormone testosterone than a female. That probably confirms why men rarely say “NO” to sex. And of course, the other thing is that women have been preprogrammed by God / Allah to say No to sex as their only natural method of controlling birth. Sincerely, when a woman says her no to sex and she means it, the way the man can plead. Only women understand me better, here.
